On 29th January, in the office of Lv Jimin, a Chinese teacher of Nantong No.2 Middle School, a bouquet of carnations stood out in vivid color. It is a birthday gift from her ‘son’ Liu Tengbo in Anhui. Every 22nd January, there is always a blessing filled with gratitude coming from Anhui to Nantong. This young man, who has escaped death twice, always remembers the two lives given to him by ‘the mother in Nantong’.

The connection began in 2003. Lv Jimin, then 28 years old, registered as a hematopoietic stem cell donor. Two years later, she was successfully matched with 12-year-old leukemia patient Liu Tengbo. It is understood that at the time, the probability of a successful match between unrelated individuals was only a few in hundreds of thousands. Lv Jimin matched the Anhui boy at six loci, meeting ideal conditions for transplantation.

At that time, Liu Tengbo was being treated in Nanjing with his parents, from a poor family. Lv Jimin, who was determined to save a life, went to the hospital for donation without hesitation. Finally, the 110 ml hematopoietic stem cells extracted from Lv Jimin, gave Liu Tengbo a new life. After the donation, Lv Jimin and Liu Tengbo called each other mother and son. And she continued to sponsor her ‘son’ far away in Anhui.

In 2025, Liu Tengbo was diagnosed with tongue cancer. Lv Jimin once again stepped forward, not only donating her precious hematopoietic stem cells again, but also seeking medical treatment and raising funds everywhere to help him overcome the difficulties in order to save this ‘son’.

‘I always tell him not to worry. Many people are concerned about his condition,’ said Lv Jimin.

The warmth continues. Liu Tengbo told ‘Mama Lv’ that he is recovering well after the surgery. His family raises many chickens and ducks, which will be sent to Nantong during the Spring Festival. He thanked ‘Mama Lv’ and all those who helped him.
