Rudong’s ecology continues to improve

By Peng Junjun
The reporter learnt from Rudong Ecological Environment Bureau that the recent biodiversity surveys show that 106 species and nearly 20,000 birds were recorded in a single spring migration in the area; the wild Milu deer population exceeds 400, with dozens of newborn fawns this spring. Rudong's ecology continues to improve.
Since wild Milu was first recorded in Rudong in 2019, their presence has expanded from a few scattered individuals to three stable groups, with a total population exceeding 400 individuals. Furthermore, they have successfully achieved natural breeding in Rudong.
During a bird survey and monitoring operation at the end of April, researchers observed 106 species and nearly 20,000 birds in a single observation. The majority of these were migratory birds. In addition, dozens of nationally protected bird species were recorded during the survey, including the Black-faced Spoonbill, Eurasian Spoonbill, Ruddy Turnstone, Eurasian Curlew, Saunders’s Gull, and Reed Parrotbill. The ‘bird waves’ formed by flocks of waterbirds taking off were truly spectacular.
